Police held a press conference and made public the following information related to the deadly mass shooting that occurred at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia.

  • The suspect was identified as an 18-year-old transgender who had converted to a woman. We do not publish the names or images of mass shooting suspects.
  • The suspect dropped out of school a few years ago.
  • The suspect first shot and killed her mother and step-brother at their home.
  • Police had been to the residence on multiple occasions in the past related to mental health issues with the suspect.
  • Firearms were at one point removed from the home, but the owner successfully petitioned to have them returned.
  • The firearms used in the attack were described as a shotgun and a modified handgun.
  • The suspect was still shooting as police arrived to the scene, and fired shots at responding officers. Police are not believed to have returned fire.
  • A total of 9 people were killed, and dozens injured.
  • Police believe the suspect acted alone and there is no ongoing threat.
  • No motive was given.

Police confirmed that the fatalities include a 39-year-old teacher, 5 students, and 2 people found at the home. All shooting victims, aside from the teacher, were between the ages of 13 and 17.

During the height of the crisis, a public alert was sent to mobile devices across the Peace River region, describing the suspect as a “female in a dress with brown hair”. The alert, which warned residents to shelter in place and lock their doors, was canceled at approximately 5:45 p.m. after police determined there were no outstanding suspects.
