South Austin Lockdown: Two Detained, One At Large In 10-Site Random Shooting Spree

A terrifying, mobile shooting spree shattered the peace of South Austin over the weekend, leaving four people injured and triggering a massive, multi-neighborhood shelter-in-place order. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis confirmed that two suspects have been arrested and law enforcement is actively hunting another accomplice tied to at least 10 seemingly random shootings that targeted passing motorists and two local fire stations.

AUSTIN, TX — An ordinary spring weekend in the Texas capital transformed into a high-stakes manhunt as a group of armed teenagers launched a series of unpredictable, mobile assaults. Between late Saturday night and Sunday morning, May 17, 2026, authorities tracked gunfire across at least 10 distinct crime scenes, primarily concentrated in the southern districts of the city.

The blatant disregard for public safety prompted Austin Police to issue an urgent shelter-in-place order for a large swath of South Austin, spanning from South Slaughter Lane to West Escarpment Boulevard. Residents were instructed to lock their doors and stay away from windows while tactical units flooded the area. The order has since been lifted, but a heightened state of vigilance remains.

The Crime Spree Timeline

According to APD Chief Lisa Davis, the attackers operated with complete randomness, lacking any discernable motive or targeted victim profile. Instead, they drove through neighborhoods firing into traffic, striking four individuals. One victim remains hospitalized in serious condition, while three others sustained minor injuries.

In a disturbing twist, two Austin Fire Department stations were deliberately caught in the crosshairs. While both facilities suffered minor structural damage from rifle or handgun rounds, no firefighters were injured, and emergency services have remained fully operational.

Vehicle Hopping and Captures

A core challenge for responding officers was the suspects’ strategy of shifting vehicles to evade detection. Investigators believe the group systematically stole or carjacked multiple vehicles as they traveled. At least four separate cars have been tied to the spree:

  • A black or dark blue 2012 Hyundai Sonata (noted for a smashed rear passenger window)
  • A gold Hyundai sedan
  • A silver four-door Mazda
  • A white Kia Optima

Thanks to an intense, coordinated effort by APD and regional tracking units, two Hispanic male suspects in their late teens were located and taken into custody on Sunday afternoon. However, the investigation remains active as detectives work to track down a third individual believed to be directly involved in the planning and execution of the attacks.

“We want to give you an update on some of the things going on,” Mayor Kirk Watson said during a joint press conference. “Please remain vigilant… If you see anything, we’re asking that you please call 911”.

Safety Tip: A mobile active shooter scenario represents one of the most unpredictable threats a defensive carrier can face. Unlike a stationary “active shooter” in a building, a vehicular spree involves threats that are constantly changing location and cover. In this case, the suspects specifically targeted vehicles and unlocked cars to facilitate their mobility. If you are driving during a localized emergency, your primary tool isn’t your firearm—it’s your vehicle’s engine. Keep your doors locked, maintain a rolling gap between you and the car ahead at intersections so you can accelerate away, and do not pull over for unmarked or suspicious civilian vehicles trying to box you in. If you are caught in the open when a vehicle-bound shooter opens fire, drop below the engine block of the nearest parked car, as standard doors and body panels will not stop intermediate or rifle-caliber rounds.
