BEAUMONT, TX – Beaumont Police say a fatal shooting earlier this month was the result of an aggravated robbery in which multiple suspects allegedly worked together to target and attack an individual who ultimately returned fire.

According to a February 24 update from the Beaumont Police Department, investigators determined through witness accounts and video surveillance that four suspects coordinated a plan to rob an individual.

Police identified the deceased as Jayson January, 17. Authorities said January, Brenden Earnest, also 17, and two juveniles allegedly attacked the intended victim during the robbery.

Investigators stated that during the incident, all four suspects assaulted the victim and fired shots at him. Police say the victim returned fire, striking January, who later died.

Brenden Earnest was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery. Detectives also obtained aggravated robbery warrants for two additional juvenile suspects, ages 16 and 15.

More from USA Carry:

In a February 25 update, Beaumont Police confirmed that the two juveniles later turned themselves in and are no longer at large. The case remains under investigation, and detectives are continuing to complete their findings before submitting the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office for review.

Police previously stated that all individuals connected to the homicide had been identified and that a person initially named as a person of interest voluntarily cooperated with investigators.

Authorities continue to ask anyone with information related to the incident to contact the Beaumont Police Department.

Incidents like this serve as a reminder that violent crime can unfold quickly and without warning. According to investigators, the victim was confronted by multiple armed suspects during an alleged robbery attempt and responded to an immediate threat to his life.

The Second Amendment protects the fundamental right of law-abiding citizens to possess the tools necessary to defend themselves when faced with violent criminal acts. Cases involving defensive gun use continue to highlight how individuals may be forced to make life-saving decisions in moments where personal safety is at risk.
