Police in Muncie say a man was shot after he allegedly attacked employees and guests inside a local bar, leaving at least two people with serious injuries that may include a broken rib and a collapsed lung. Prosecutors have now filed multiple felony battery charges while investigators continue to review witness statements and video from inside the business.

MUNCIE, IN (4-minute read) — Court documents describe a frightening scene inside the Red Dog Saloon in Muncie, where a man is accused of attacking staff and guests before being shot by one of the people he allegedly targeted.

Prosecutors say fifty three year old Larry Scott has been charged with two counts of aggravated battery as Level 3 felonies, four counts of battery resulting in moderate injury while armed with a deadly firearm as Level 5 felonies, and three counts of battery by bodily waste as Level 6 felonies. These charges stem from a disturbance reported Tuesday at about 8:43 in the evening at the bar on the sixteen hundred block of West Twenty Third Street.

Violent Incident Inside The Muncie Bar

When officers from the Muncie Police Department arrived, they did not find Scott inside the business. Instead, they located him walking away from the area with a gunshot wound. Police say he was immediately transported to a local hospital for medical treatment and later identified as the suspect in the reported assaults.

According to witness statements and video reviewed by investigators, Scott first threw a punch at a female employee from across the bar. After that, he allegedly spit on her, another employee, and a guest, leading to the battery by bodily waste charges. Witnesses told police that the situation escalated quickly as people tried to create distance and protect themselves.

Investigators say Scott then grabbed metal bar stools and chairs and used them as improvised striking tools. He reportedly threw them with great force at four different people inside the saloon. Two of those individuals are believed to have suffered serious injuries, including possible broken ribs and a collapsed lung, injuries that can be life threatening if not treated quickly.

Alleged Self Defense Shooting Ends The Attack

The attack reportedly came to an end only when one of the intended victims fired at Scott, striking him. Police have not yet publicly detailed who fired the shot, what kind of firearm was used or whether that person was an employee, a security worker, or a patron who was armed. In Indiana, people generally have the right to use reasonable force, and in some situations deadly force, to defend themselves or others from serious bodily harm. Whether that standard was met in this case will be part of the ongoing investigation and any future legal proceedings.

For lawful gun owners, this kind of incident is a reminder that carrying a concealed firearm is not only about having the tool, but also about understanding when you are legally allowed to use it. Even in a chaotic bar environment, investigators will examine whether the person who fired believed there was an immediate threat of death or serious injury, whether escape was possible, and whether their actions were proportional to the danger.

Ongoing Investigation And Legal Process

Police describe this as an active investigation. Detectives are still reviewing video evidence and interviewing witnesses in an effort to piece together the exact sequence of events, including what happened before the first punch was thrown and how quickly the scene escalated.

All of the charges filed against Scott are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. As the case moves through the legal system, prosecutors will weigh the evidence from the bar’s security cameras, medical records from the injured parties, and statements from those who were present.

For bar owners and staff, this incident also serves as a reminder of the importance of training in de-escalation, clear policies on removing aggressive patrons, and knowing when to call law enforcement at the first signs of violence.

Safety Tip: If you carry a firearm for personal protection, train regularly not only in safe handling and marksmanship but also in understanding your state’s self defense laws, including when you must try to disengage, when you may stand your ground, and when the use of deadly force is not legally justified.
