Omaha police officers fatally shot 31-year-old Noemi Guzman on Tuesday morning after she allegedly kidnapped a 3-year-old boy from a local Walmart and began slashing him with a shoplifted kitchen knife. The child, identified as Cyler Hillman, underwent surgery for a large laceration to his face and hand but is expected to survive the unprovoked attack.

OMAHA, NE — A terrifying random abduction at an Omaha Walmart ended in a fatal police shooting and a miraculous survival for a young boy. Around 9:13 a.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, Omaha Police Department (OPD) officers were called to the Walmart at 1606 S. 72nd Street regarding an active kidnapping.

According to investigators and store surveillance, 31-year-old Noemi Guzman shoplifted a large kitchen knife from the store before approaching a 3-year-old boy, Cyler Hillman, and his guardian, Sara, in a shopping aisle. Guzman allegedly took control of the shopping cart and ordered Sara to walk in front of her as they casually exited the building toward the parking lot.

“A Final, Violent Act”

When OPD Officers Brian Seaton and Roger Oseka intercepted the group in the parking lot, they found Guzman holding the knife to the child’s body. Despite multiple verbal commands to drop the weapon, body-worn camera footage reportedly shows Guzman raising the knife and “swiping” it across the child’s face and hand.

Fearing for the boy’s life, the officers opened fire, striking and killing Guzman at the scene. Immediately following the shots, Sara and a nearby bystander rushed to the cart to pull Cyler to safety and render aid.

Recovery and Investigation

Cyler Hillman was rushed to Children’s Hospital where he underwent surgery for a “rather large laceration” on the left side of his face and his hand. His parents have since shared that “their little cowboy” is out of surgery and on the road to recovery.

Investigators have confirmed that Guzman and the victims were complete strangers, and the motive for the kidnapping remains unknown. Officers Seaton and Oseka have been placed on standard administrative leave pending a joint investigation by the OPD, the Nebraska State Patrol, and the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office.

Safety Tip: An abduction in a public space often happens with terrifying normalcy—as seen in this case, the suspect and victims “purposely but casually” walked out of the store without drawing attention. As a parent or guardian, your primary defensive tool is situational awareness. If a stranger attempts to “take possession” of your child’s cart or stroller, you must create an immediate scene to alert bystanders and store security. If you are a concealed carry holder witnessing such an event, be aware that hostage situations are the most complex tactical environments possible. In this scenario, the Omaha officers were forced to fire because the suspect began actively harming the child. Your best role as a bystander is to act as a witness and, if safe to do so, provide immediate trauma aid (like applying pressure to a wound) once the threat is neutralized.
