ST. PAUL, MN – Minnesota lawmakers are scheduled to consider two firearm-related bills next week that would impose sweeping restrictions on commonly owned semiautomatic firearms and ammunition magazines.

According to a legislative alert published by the NRA Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA), the Minnesota House Public Safety Finance and Policy Committee will hold a hearing on Tuesday, February 24, to review House File 3433 and House File 3402, two proposals that could significantly affect lawful gun owners in the state.

House File 3433 would prohibit certain gas-operated semiautomatic firearms. Under the proposal, individuals who already lawfully possess affected firearms would be required to register them with the state before May 1, 2027, and comply with mandatory storage requirements afterward.

House File 3402 would establish magazine capacity restrictions, limiting magazines to 10 rounds. The bill does not include a grandfather clause, meaning owners of affected magazines would be required to move them out of state, modify them to comply, destroy them, or surrender them to law enforcement.

The NRA-ILA alert states that both measures impact firearms and magazines that are commonly owned by law-abiding Americans and raises concerns about how the proposals align with the Second Amendment’s common use standard.

The committee hearing represents the next step in the legislative process, where lawmakers will review testimony and debate whether the bills should advance further.

For Minnesota gun owners, the upcoming hearing will be an important opportunity to follow developments that could affect lawful firearm ownership, storage requirements, and commonly used equipment for self-defense and sporting purposes.
