DES MOINES, IA – A late-night home invasion ended with an intruder hospitalized and facing felony charges after a homeowner defended themselves during an assault inside a Union Park residence.

According to the Des Moines Police Department, officers responded just before 11:00 PM to a home in the 1500 block of Guthrie Avenue after a 911 caller reported an intruder attacking the homeowner. While officers were en route, the caller stated that the intruder had been shot.

Officers arrived and located 46-year-old Stannita Wilson inside the residence suffering from multiple gunshot injuries. Police provided first aid until Des Moines Fire Department personnel transported Wilson to MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center.

Investigators determined the homeowner had heard someone yelling in their backyard followed by banging on the back door. When the homeowner unlocked the door, Wilson reportedly forced entry and began assaulting the homeowner.

The homeowner, who was armed with a handgun, fired at Wilson during the attack.

Police said Wilson’s injuries were minor. After being released from the hospital, she was charged with Burglary in the Second Degree, a Class C felony. Authorities confirmed Wilson was not known to the homeowner.

More from USA Carry:

No charges have been filed against the homeowner at this time. Detectives say the investigation remains ongoing.

Incidents like this highlight an important home defense principle. A locked door provides time, distance, and protection during uncertain situations. Opening a door to an unknown person late at night can remove those layers of safety. Remaining inside a secured home while contacting authorities is often the safer choice.

In this case, the homeowner was armed and able to respond when the situation turned violent. Lawful firearm ownership allows individuals to defend themselves when faced with an immediate physical attack inside their own home.

The Second Amendment protects the fundamental right of law-abiding citizens to possess the tools necessary to defend their lives when confronted with a sudden and unavoidable threat. Situations unfold quickly, and personal safety decisions made in seconds can determine the outcome.
