LAS VEGAS, NV – A confrontation between employees at a west Las Vegas valley business Sunday evening ended in a fatal shooting after police say one worker intervened when an armed ex-employee began chasing another employee.

As reported by 8 News Now, officers responded around 5:15 p.m. to the 1100 block of South Fort Apache Road near Charleston Boulevard after receiving a 911 call reporting a man chasing another person with a gun. The call was later updated to report that shots had been fired.

When officers arrived, they located a man in a parking lot suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said preliminary information shows the incident began when an ex-employee arrived at the business and confronted a current employee. During that confrontation, the ex-employee allegedly began chasing the employee while armed with a firearm.

Investigators say a second employee retrieved a firearm from his vehicle and shot the armed ex-employee while he was chasing the co-worker.

Police confirmed the armed ex-employee did not fire any shots, and no other injuries were reported.

The employee who fired the gun remained at the scene and was taken into custody. Authorities said he is cooperating with investigators. Detectives are examining how self-defense and the defense of others may apply in the case. Charging decisions will be made by the district attorney after the investigation is completed.

Police have not released a motive explaining why the ex-employee allegedly returned to confront the worker.

More From USA Carry:

The shooting happened in the Boca Park area, a popular west Las Vegas destination filled with restaurants, shops, and everyday foot traffic. It is an area many locals visit regularly and generally consider safe.

This incident struck especially close to home for me personally. The scene is roughly three miles from where I live, in an area my girlfriend and I frequent often. Several of the restaurants nearby are places we visit on a regular basis. Like most people, you do not expect something like this to happen in familiar surroundings during a normal afternoon.

That reality is exactly why many responsible gun owners choose to carry. Violent encounters rarely announce themselves ahead of time, and they do not limit themselves to unfamiliar or high-crime locations. When an immediate threat appears, the ability to respond in defense of innocent life may come down to the people already present before police can arrive.

The Second Amendment protects the fundamental right of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms so they are not left defenseless when confronted with sudden danger. Incidents like this serve as a reminder that preparedness is not about fear. It is about recognizing that emergencies can occur anywhere, even in places we know well.
