MEMPHIS, TN — Two men are in the hospital in critical condition after an argument over a place in line at a Southwest Memphis market turned into a shooting Friday afternoon, according to the Memphis Police Department. Read that again. A spot in line. That is what two men are now fighting for their lives over, and it is exactly the kind of story I want every armed citizen to sit with for a minute.

As reported by WREG, officers responded to the AMG Raines Mini Mart in the 700 block of W. Raines Road on July 17. When they arrived, they found multiple shell casings, bullet fragments, and one man lying on the floor saying he had been shot. A short time later, a second man arrived at a hospital in a private vehicle.

The store clerk told police the two customers started arguing after one accused the other of cutting the line to purchase items. Investigators pulled the store’s video footage, and the sequence it captured is where this story becomes a lesson. Once the two men were face to face, police say the first man lifted his shirt to show a firearm in his front waistband. That move is what matters here. A firearm exists for one purpose, defense against an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm. It is not a trump card in an argument over who reaches the register first. The moment that shirt came up, a pointless argument became a potential gunfight.

Police said the second man reacted by reaching for that firearm, and the two began fighting. Then a third man, later identified as the brother of the second customer, came into the store, pulled out his own firearm, and began shooting at the first man. Video also showed the second man pulling a handgun from his waistline and firing at the first man. The brother picked up the first man’s firearm, police said, and the two left the scene in a white GMC.

The second man arrived at the hospital with a single gunshot wound. Officers detained his brother and recovered a handgun from his waistband, and they later located the white GMC seen leaving the store. Both wounded men are in critical condition.

More from USA Carry:

Notice the language police are using. Both wounded men are described as victim/suspects. No names have been released, no charges have been announced in the reporting so far, and prosecutors will make the final determination on who, if anyone, was legally justified in any part of this. From where I sit, there is no defender in this story. There are three men who each had a chance to make it smaller and instead made it bigger.

The first thing I want you to take from this is the ego check. Everyone has a problem with wanting to be right. I do too. But being right about your place in line is worth exactly nothing, and two men are in critical condition because neither one could let the other have it. If you carry a gun, you gave up the luxury of winning arguments like this the day you strapped it on. Walking away from a line-cutter is not weakness. It is the entire job. Ask yourself honestly, is a spot in line worth your life, or worth taking someone else’s? The gun on your hip demands more restraint from you, not less, and that restraint is a mindset you build long before anyone cuts in front of you.

The second lesson is where this happened. Not a dark parking lot at 2 a.m. A neighborhood mini mart on a Friday afternoon, the kind of stop you make a hundred times without thinking. Violence does not make an appointment. It pops up where you least expect it, which is exactly why situational awareness is always a top priority. There was a store clerk behind that counter and there could have been anyone else in those aisles when three armed men started shooting over nothing. Head up, eyes open, every errand, every time. And when you see two men squaring up over something this stupid, the correct move is distance, not curiosity.

Two men in critical condition. A third detained. All of it over a place in line. Check your ego at the door. It is the cheapest piece of safety equipment you will ever carry.
