CHESTER, NY (3-minute read) — A disturbing incident unfolded in Chester, New York, on the night of May 2, 2025, when a DoorDash delivery run turned into a violent confrontation. A delivery driver, attempting to drop off an order, became disoriented in the Valerie Drive neighborhood and sought help navigating the area.

His search for directions ended in tragedy when he encountered John J. Reilly III, a local official and federally licensed firearms dealer (FFL), who responded with gunfire.

According to the New York State Police, the victim approached Reilly’s home after asking for directions at other residences. Reilly reportedly ordered the driver off his property and, as the driver was attempting to leave in his vehicle, fired multiple rounds, one of which struck the man in the back. The driver, whose name has not been released, managed to reach help and was later transported to Garnet Health Medical Center with serious injuries.

Reilly, 48, currently serves as the Highway Superintendent for the Town of Chester and holds a federal firearms license. Following the shooting, he was arrested by the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and charged with several felonies, including Assault in the First Degree, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.

He was arraigned and is being held at Orange County Jail on a high bond, with a preliminary court hearing scheduled for May 9.

Firearms Ownership and Legal Use

As a licensed firearms dealer and public official, Reilly’s actions raise significant concerns about responsible gun ownership and proper use of force. Even in stand-your-ground or castle doctrine jurisdictions, firing on someone who is retreating—particularly from inside a vehicle—can violate both ethical standards and legal limits.

Firearm owners must understand the legal parameters for self-defense. Misusing a firearm not only jeopardizes lives but also undermines the credibility of responsible gun ownership, especially for those entrusted with public duties and federal licenses.

The ongoing investigation includes coordination with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), highlighting the seriousness of the case.

Safety Tip: Always understand your state’s use-of-force laws and never discharge a firearm unless there is a clear and immediate threat to life or serious bodily harm.
