LAFOURCHE PARISH, LA — A fatal hunting incident is under investigation after a man was accidentally shot and killed on November 29, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF).

Authorities say the man was fatally struck by a .308 caliber bullet while walking to a hunting location with his partner. The two were reportedly crossing a cattle guard when the victim passed his rifle to the other hunter. The firearm discharged during the handoff, resulting in a fatal injury before emergency responders could arrive.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m., and the man’s body was recovered at the scene and later turned over to the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office. LDWF enforcement agents and the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office are jointly investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Officials are reminding hunters to carry unloaded firearms with the safety engaged when traveling to and from hunting sites.

This tragic accident highlights the critical importance of basic firearm safety practices during all phases of a hunt. Even brief lapses in safe handling — such as transferring a loaded weapon — can lead to devastating consequences. Treating every firearm as if it is loaded, keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, and ensuring the safety is on during transport are essential habits for all hunters.
