BRADENTON, FL — A homeowner’s quick thinking and preparedness turned a potentially deadly home invasion into a successful act of self-defense late Thursday night in the River Club community. The incident resulted in the fatal shooting of one suspect and the arrest of another.

At approximately 9 p.m., the homeowner’s surveillance system detected motion near the side of his residence on Hickory Hammock Circle. Upon investigating, the homeowner spotted two masked individuals attempting to enter the home. Acting decisively, he instructed his wife to retreat to a safe room while he retrieved his firearm.

Moments later, the homeowner confronted the intruders, opening fire and striking one of the suspects multiple times. The injured intruder, later identified as Jorge Nestevan Flores-Toledo, 27, of Mexico, succumbed to his injuries the following morning at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Deputies later tracked the second suspect, 39-year-old Michel Soto-Mella of Chile, using K9 units and apprehended him a few blocks away.

Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells commended the homeowner’s actions during a press conference on Friday. “This is the state of Florida. If you want to break into someone’s home, you should expect to be shot,” Wells said. He praised the homeowner for protecting his family and acting swiftly under duress.

Suspects’ Criminal Histories and Legal Status

The deceased suspect, Flores-Toledo, also known by the alias Anibal Miller-Valencia, had a history of criminal activity. He was arrested in Illinois in 2023 for residential burglary and had an active warrant for violating parole. Authorities deemed him armed and dangerous at the time of the incident. Soto-Mella, the surviving suspect, was found to be in the U.S. illegally, having overstayed his visa after it expired in September.

Soto-Mella faces charges of armed burglary, with additional charges, including felony murder, under consideration. Florida law allows for such charges if a death occurs during the commission of a felony.

Sheriff Urges Vigilance

Sheriff Wells emphasized that the suspects’ motives remain unclear, and investigators are working to determine if other individuals were involved. He encouraged anyone with information to contact the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers.

Self-Defense Tip: Preparedness Matters

This incident highlights the importance of situational awareness, having a plan, and understanding the laws governing self-defense. The homeowner’s decision to arm himself and instruct his wife to seek safety likely prevented a more tragic outcome. In a high-stress situation, clarity of action and adherence to self-defense principles are critical. Be sure to regularly assess your home’s security measures and ensure your family knows what to do in an emergency.
