YORKTOWN, VA — A road rage incident that began on a busy highway escalated into a physical confrontation and ended in a shooting on April 9, 2025, at the Grafton Station Apartment complex, according to the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 2:00 PM to reports of a shooting near the intersection of Piccadilly Loop and Justice Lane. Upon arrival, they found a man with a gunshot wound to the abdomen and detained another man believed to be the shooter. The firearm used in the incident was recovered at the scene.

According to investigators, the altercation began several miles away in the area of George Washington Memorial Highway and Denbigh Boulevard. Two vehicles were involved in a road rage encounter that continued until both vehicles arrived at the Grafton Station Apartments — a location believed to be the shooter’s residence.

Once there, a male passenger from the other vehicle exited, approached the shooter’s vehicle, opened the driver’s side door, and began physically assaulting the driver, striking him in the head and face. Suffering visible injuries, the driver then retrieved a handgun from his vehicle’s center console and shot his attacker once in the abdomen.

The wounded man was transported to a hospital for emergency surgery and is currently in serious condition. Multiple witnesses corroborated the sequence of events, and no charges have been filed at this time. The investigation remains ongoing.

This incident highlights two important considerations for armed citizens. First, if you believe you’re being followed during a road rage situation, it is generally safer to drive to a police or fire station rather than going home, which can potentially escalate the risk to yourself and others. Second, keeping your firearm on your person — rather than in a vehicle console — allows for quicker access and ensures the gun remains under your control if you need to exit the car quickly. Additionally, storing firearms in vehicles should be avoided when possible to reduce the risk of theft.
