OAKLAND, CA (4-minute read) — An attempted armed robbery at a Cash For Gold shop on International Boulevard in Oakland ended in deadly gunfire Wednesday night, leaving two suspects dead and three others hospitalized. The shop owner, who was also wounded during the exchange, is expected to recover.

Gunfire Breaks Out During Robbery Attempt

The incident unfolded just before 8 p.m. when five individuals entered the pawn shop near 71st Avenue, reportedly attempting to rob the business. According to the Oakland Police Officers’ Association, a gunfight broke out inside the store when the shop owner responded with his own firearm.

Police said a silent alarm was triggered, prompting a rapid response within five minutes. Upon arrival, officers encountered a chaotic scene with multiple people injured, spent shell casings scattered across the floor, and several firearms present at the scene.

One suspect was found dead inside the store, while a second succumbed to injuries at the hospital. The other three suspects were also shot and remain hospitalized under police supervision. While police confirmed the suspects are in custody, a deputy on the scene said no formal arrests had been made as of Wednesday night.

The shop owner, reportedly defending himself during the robbery, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. A friend told reporters he is expected to fully recover. Another employee was present during the attempted robbery but was not harmed.

Community Frustration and Law Enforcement Response

Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee’s office released a statement acknowledging the tragic event and expressing frustration with the ongoing violence in the city.

Police confirmed the investigation remains active and more details are expected to be shared during a scheduled press conference on Thursday. Authorities are currently working to notify the families of the deceased suspects and analyze the ballistic evidence recovered from the scene.

When Self-Defense Turns Deadly

This incident reignites ongoing discussions about the role of armed self-defense for business owners in high-crime areas. Under California law, individuals are allowed to use reasonable force, including deadly force, if they believe they are in imminent danger of death or serious injury. However, the circumstances and use of force are always scrutinized during investigations.

Many shop owners, especially in urban areas like Oakland, choose to keep a firearm on the premises for personal protection. While it’s legal in many cases, it also carries significant responsibility, including knowledge of local laws, secure storage practices, and ongoing training in firearm use.

Safety Tip: If you choose to keep a firearm for self-defense in your business or home, make sure it is stored securely and you are trained to use it responsibly. Always stay up to date with your local and state firearm laws to ensure legal protection.
