CHAMPLIN, MN (3-minute read) — A former Minnesota state board member is at the center of a manhunt following a shocking and politically charged crime spree that left one state lawmaker dead and another seriously wounded. Authorities have identified 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, a former appointee to Governor Tim Walz’s Workforce Development Board, as the primary suspect in two targeted shootings involving prominent Minnesota politicians.

According to law enforcement sources, Boelter allegedly disguised himself as a police officer early Saturday morning before going to the Champlin residence of State Senator John Hoffman. Once there, Boelter reportedly opened fire on Hoffman and his wife, leaving both in critical condition. Investigators believe the attack was not random, but rather a calculated act linked to Boelter’s political grievances.

Shortly after that assault, Boelter is believed to have driven to the home of former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman. Tragically, Hortman and her husband were both found dead at the scene. Police who responded to the area said they briefly confronted Boelter and exchanged gunfire, but he managed to escape.

Political Motive and Dangerous Intent

The suspect’s vehicle contained printed flyers with the phrase “No Kings,” reportedly tied to planned protests against the Trump administration. Officers also discovered what they’re calling a manifesto and a list of other politicians’ names, suggesting the attack was premeditated and ideologically driven. While police have not disclosed the contents of the manifesto, officials say the writings point to deep-seated political motivations.

Boelter’s political history includes appointments under both Democratic Governors Mark Dayton and Tim Walz. While his role was primarily economic and advisory, his recent turn to violence has stunned Minnesota’s political community.

The incident underscores the rising danger of politically motivated attacks, a growing concern among law enforcement and public officials. With Boelter still at large, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any sightings or suspicious activity.

Safety Tip: Always verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a law enforcement officer before opening your door. Ask for credentials, and when in doubt, call 911 to confirm.
