CHICAGO, IL (2-minute read) — A concealed carry license holder took swift action early Monday morning when he caught two men allegedly trying to break into his vehicle on Chicago’s Far South Side.

The incident unfolded around 1:02 a.m. in the 13400 block of South Green Bay, when one of the suspects, a 21-year-old man, called 911 claiming he had been shot in a drive-by attack. He described his supposed assailants and their vehicle in an apparent attempt to mislead responding officers.

However, a second 911 call soon provided clarity. The actual shooter—a legal concealed carry permit holder—told police he witnessed two individuals breaking into his car and acted in self-defense. He fired his firearm, striking one of the men in both legs to stop the burglary in progress.

The wounded suspect was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital and is reported to be in fair condition. Chicago Police Department officials confirmed the man is now in custody and facing charges related to burglary.

Authorities have not reported any charges against the armed citizen, as current Illinois law permits the use of reasonable force to prevent a forcible felony, such as burglary.

Safety Tip: If you carry concealed, regularly review your state’s use-of-force laws and consider seeking additional self-defense training beyond the basic requirements.
