CHICAGO, IL (1-minute read) — A concealed carry permit holder in Chicago’s South Side shot a man during a heated altercation late last night, claiming the situation turned dangerous when the other man, allegedly a marijuana dealer, drew a firearm.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on the 7200 block of South South Shore Drive. A 30-year-old man was standing outside when he became involved in a verbal exchange with another individual seated in a vehicle. The discussion reportedly escalated after the man in the car pulled a gun, prompting the concealed carrier to draw his own firearm and fire a single shot, striking the other man in the chest.

The injured individual drove himself to Jackson Park Hospital, where he was admitted in fair condition. Officers later recovered a firearm inside his vehicle, corroborating the concealed carrier’s account.

Preliminary information suggests that the concealed carrier was attempting to purchase marijuana when the dealer threatened him with a firearm. The injured man remains in police custody at the hospital as investigators review the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This case underscores the complexities of firearm self-defense and the importance of adhering to local laws and regulations. While concealed carry laws allow individuals to protect themselves, engaging in illegal activity, such as drug transactions, complicates the legal defense of self-defense claims.

In other words, don’t do it.

Safety Tip: Always ensure you are in compliance with local firearm and concealed carry laws. Avoid situations that could escalate into violence, and exercise heightened situational awareness when engaging with unknown individuals.
