HARDEEVILLE, SC — A suspected carjacker was fatally shot by an armed citizen Sunday night after allegedly attempting to carry out a series of armed assaults, including the attempted carjacking of a DoorDash delivery driver, according to local authorities.

The incident began around 9:38 p.m. on March 24, when Hardeeville Police officers were dispatched to the area of 20750 Whyte Hardee Boulevard following reports of an armed suspect in the vicinity. According to a statement from the Hardeeville Police Department, officers arrived to find two male subjects, one of whom had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, the wounded individual was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital.

Earlier that evening, police said the suspect had attempted to carjack a DoorDash delivery driver. According to The Island Packet, the suspect fled on foot after the failed carjacking attempt and was later seen in the area of the Econo Lodge Inn & Suites. Witnesses and police reported hearing gunshots in that area, though it was unclear whether the shots were directed at anyone.

Shortly afterward, the suspect approached a second driver near the Friendship Inn & Studios on Whyte Hardee Boulevard, allegedly pointing a firearm and firing at least one shot at the driver. In response, the driver, who was lawfully armed, returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times. The Hardeeville Police Department later confirmed that the man was hit by at least three rounds.

Investigators said the evidence indicates the deceased man was actively attempting armed assaults when he encountered the armed citizen who acted in self-defense. The driver was initially detained for questioning but was released after police

determined his actions were likely justifiable.

Hardeeville Police Chief Sam Woodward stated that the investigation is ongoing, but “everything’s pointing” to self-defense. He also confirmed that the deceased man had previously been trespassed from a business earlier that night and had been involved in multiple prior drug-related investigations, though none had previously escalated to violence.

The Jasper County Coroner’s Office had not released the identity of the suspect as of Tuesday afternoon, pending next-of-kin notification.

This case remains under active investigation, though police emphasized there is no ongoing threat to the public.

This incident highlights the importance of situational awareness and being prepared to respond quickly to an imminent threat. The armed citizen’s ability to act decisively under pressure likely saved his life. Responsible concealed carry can offer a critical line of defense when faced with a life-threatening attack. As always, ensure you’re trained, legally carrying, and aware of your surroundings.
