SYDNEY, NSW — An American woman has been sentenced to 12 months in prison after attempting to smuggle a 24-carat gold-plated handgun into Australia. On April 23, 2023, 29-year-old Liliana Goodson was arrested at Sydney Airport when Australian Border Force (ABF) officers discovered the custom Colt 45-style pistol in her hand luggage during an X-ray screening.

Goodson, who traveled from Los Angeles to Sydney on a working holiday visa, informed officers that she intended to attend clown school in Sydney. She admitted to not declaring the firearm on her arrival card and initially claimed to have forgotten about the weapon in her luggage. However, investigations revealed that prior to her departure, she had conducted online searches, including “Can I carry a gun in my suitcase?” and had set a phone reminder to pack the pistol.

In court, Goodson’s lawyer argued that she packed the firearm while under the influence of synthetic marijuana, which she used to cope with past trauma, leading to paranoia. The defense highlighted her subsequent efforts toward rehabilitation, noting her involvement in creative pursuits such as working on a music album and volunteering at a local art center.

Magistrate Susan Horan emphasized the seriousness of the offense, stating that the unauthorized importation of firearms necessitates significant deterrence. Goodson was sentenced to 12 months in prison, with a non-parole period of four months, fined $1,000, and ordered to participate in drug counseling upon release.

This incident underscores the critical importance of understanding and adhering to the firearm laws of any country one plans to visit. Travelers must ensure they are fully informed about local regulations to avoid severe legal repercussions. Most countries, including Australia, have strict laws prohibiting individuals from bringing firearms, especially handguns, without prior authorization. For alternative defensive options when traveling abroad, such as using non-lethal tools or enhancing situational awareness, this guide offers practical advice.

For those who plan to travel with firearms and want to follow the law, it’s essential to understand the regulations and proper procedures for transporting firearms internationally. This detailed article outlines how to safely and legally check a firearm when flying, ensuring compliance with both airline and destination country requirements.
