HARRIS COUNTY, TX — A man is dead and another has been charged with murder after deputies say the two were taking turns shooting a rifle at each other while one wore a Kevlar helmet inside a Harris County home.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call on August 17, 2025, in the 23700 block of Pennington Hills Drive. When they arrived, they found a 34-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head. The victim, identified as Aaron Prout of the United Kingdom, was transported to a local hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

The homeowner, 37-year-old Sean Odonnell, was reportedly present during the incident. Initially, the shooting was reported as a possible suicide. However, after further investigation, authorities began to question the nature of the incident.

Deputies determined that Odonnell and Prout had been taking turns shooting at each other with a rifle while one of them wore a Kevlar helmet. The shooting happened inside the house. At some point during this exchange, Prout was shot in the head and later died at the hospital.

On August 28, detectives with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office officially charged Odonnell with the alleged murder of Prout. He was taken into custody with the assistance of the Violent Crimes Task Force and booked into the Harris County Jail.

Sheriff Gonzalez commended the work of CSI Ward, Detectives Craig, Davis, and Sergeant Miller’s team, noting that while the case initially appeared to be a suicide, inconsistencies in the scene and story led to a deeper investigation and eventual arrest.

This is exactly what happens when people treat guns like toys. Firearms aren’t meant for games, stunts, or proving something. The Second Amendment protects the right to own and carry guns, but that comes with responsibility. Basic safety, common sense, and knowing what you’re doing matter. Ignoring that gets people killed.
